Who sings the cover of Ship of Fools on Fargo?

Noah Hawley and Jeff Russo
Executive producer Noah Hawley and composer Jeff Russo

Looking for the cover of “Ship of Fools” featured in tonight’s episode of Fargo? We can confirm that’s the work of multi-talented Fargo showrunner Noah Hawley and series composer Jeff Russo.

We spoke last month with Maggie Phillips, music supervisor of Fargo and Legion (another Hawley project). Soundtrack details for the upcoming season of Fargo were under wraps at the time, but she hinted that this season would have a big scene featuring a cover by a mystery artist. Our only clue at the time was that Jeff Russo was involved. We circled back with Maggie and got confirmation of the details tonight.

Fans of the show will remember that Hawley and Russo partnered last season on a gorgeous version of “Didn’t Leave Nobody But the Baby.” Originally featured in Coen brothers film O Brother, Where Art Thou?, the song was one of several outstanding covers featured throughout season 2 of Fargo.

Fans of tonight’s new version of “Ship of Fools” will have to wait to get their hands on the song. It’s not currently available anywhere, though hopefully we’ll see another Fargo soundtrack album in the future. In the meantime, you can enjoy the original, by World Party:
