Kicking off the season 2 premiere of Insecure on HBO, “Scared Money” by NxWorries takes the top spot on our weekly TV music chart. A collaboration between Anderson.Paak and Knxwledge, NxWorries is right in the sweet spot of the authentic L.A. sound of Insecure.
In an interview with Complex, Music Supervisor Kier Lehman shared more about how they settled on “Scared Money” for the key song to set the tone for season 2: “We’re all big .Paak fans, big Knxwledge fans, big fans of L.A. hip-hop, and that album [Yes Lawd!] was a great coming together of their sounds. We were trying to feature an important L.A. artist in that spot [to start the season], to try and compare or match the energy and resonance of that Kendrick use [to open season 1]. We wanted to find what could stand next to that, something that’s connected to Los Angeles but feels exciting and new, and draws you into the show. We went through a bunch of tracks before [“Scared Money”] become the favorite that we agreed on. We may have another one from them in the show, at some point.”
Lehman and Insecure creator Issa Rae are constantly on the hunt for new artists and songs that the show’s characters would actually be listening to as they go about their lives. And they try to keep things fresh and current, often setting on songs just weeks before the episode airs. This includes a lot of unreleased songs and underground independent artists, so get ready to discover some new music.
One artist getting some new fans from her exposure on the show is Jorja Smith. Her track “February 3rd” was also featured in the S2 premiere and has fans in a frenzy to get the song. (Note: Tunefind’s weekly chart excludes unreleased tracks, but “February 3rd” would have been a contender.)
Lehman also shared that during this season we’ll be hearing more original songs created just for the show, featuring artists like Kari Faux, TT the Artist, and others. Here at Tunefind we’ll be working with Kier to make sure we’ve got all the correct songs listed, even if they aren’t yet released.
You’ll also be able to get some of those tracks on the season 2 soundtrack being released by RCA. First up from that soundtrack album is Leikeli47‘s “Attitude,” which was also featured in the season premiere.
