Voting Opens Soon for New Music Supervision Emmy

Emmy voting begins next week! We’re especially excited because of a new category this year: Music Supervision. Members of the music peer group of the Television Academy are eligible to vote for this brand new Emmy recognizing “exceptional creative contributions to a program through the use of music.”

With votes accepted only during a brief two week window, the pressure is on for Academy members to do their research and cast their ballots. After reviewing nominated content via a secure viewing platform, voting members can cast their votes. Members of the music peer group of the Television Academy are eligible to vote for the brand new Emmy category for Music Supervision.

Since this is a new category, we pulled together some handy details about the inaugural group of nominees for Music Supervision.

Sad that your favorite show isn’t nominated? It was a hotly contested category, with 90 nominations submitted for just 5 nominee slots. And Music Supervisors had to submit extra details for this first year of the award. The Emmy nomination and voting process is complex, so the Television Academy has created this helpful infographic on How an Emmy is Won.

Academy members have until August 28th to cast their ballots for the various Emmy categories. And then the pressure will be on Ernst + Young to tally the votes, and avoid a repeat of PWC’s Best Picture debacle during the 2017 Oscars!

This year’s Emmy Awards will be held on Sept. 17 and will be hosted by Stephen Colbert, host of CBS’ The Late Show.

The Guild of Music Supervisors was key in the creation of this new award category, conducting a multi-year effort to raise awareness and educate the Television Academy about how the role of music – and music supervisors – has changed over the past decade or so. Music Supervisors first became voting members of the Academy in 2015, followed by the announcement of the new Music Supervision category in January 2017.
