Nostalgic Farewell: Music Favorites from The Big Bang Theory

Comedy juggernaut The Big Bang Theory came to an end last month with a nostalgic finale. We’re taking a look back at the most popular music moments, from the theme song to cast performances, and everything in between.

Of course, we have to start with with iconic theme song. Back in 2007, show creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady called on Ed Robertson and Tyler Stewart of the Barenaked Ladies to create and record the theme for the CBS series.

A band known for their quirky humor, the Barenaked Ladies delivered a science-laden earworm that Robertson wrote one morning in the shower. A full-length version called ‘A History of Everything’ appeared on BNL’s best-of album, Hits from Yesterday & the Day Before.

As the series came to a close, vocalist/guitarist Ed Robertson of the Canadian rock group recorded an acoustic rendition of The Big Bang theme (see below) that was featured in the last moments of the finale. A new instrumental version also debuted on the post-finale special, “Unraveling The Mystery: A Big Bang Farewell.”

According to Associated Press, The Big Bang Theory live viewership reached 18.5 million for the two-episode finale, placing the CBS series at #1 for the week. Notably, this places The Big Bang finale ahead of the Game of Thrones finale airing that same week, based on live viewership.

“Big Bang” was a colossal ratings winner that helped keep CBS the top network for much of its record run of 279 episodes, the most ever for a multi-camera series.

After the series finale and special, Big Bang Theory star Kaley Cuoco shared a flash mob performance – set to a Backstreet Boys classic – as a celebratory send-off for the long-running series where the cast/crew has become like family.

For those of you not ready to say goodbye, series spinoff Young Sheldon follows 9-year-old Sheldon Cooper (played by Iain Armitage) starting high school. Jim Parsons, who plays the adult version of Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory serves as narrator for his character’s early years. The spinoff has been renewed by CBS for two additional seasons coming soon. As always, we’re tracking the songs in the Young Sheldon soundtrack over on Tunefind.
