At the end, Mer explains to Zola about Alex.

The episode caps off an emotional series of goodbyes with a final scene between Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and her daughter, Zola (Aniela Gumbs) as they discuss Alex’s departure from Seattle.

As one of the original group of interns who started out on Grey’s Anatomy 16 seasons ago, Alex Karev is one of only a handful of original characters who has endured for 350+ episodes. From bad boy antagonist to respected surgeon and leader, Karev has had a few of the most memorable story lines on Grey’s. Fans would point to his relationship with Dr. Isobel Stevens (played by Katherine Heigl), which was a key element of this goodbye episode.

Grey’s Anatomy picture editor Vanessa Delgado requested this beautiful track by Plested,” Alexandra Patsavas, Grey’s music supervisor, shared with Tunefind. “This was a very special episode as Grey’s fans said goodbye to Alex Karev after 16 seasons. Also featured in the episode was the original Alex and Izzie love song, ‘Turn To Stone’ by Ingrid Michaelson and a brand new cover crafted by Life On Eris.”

‘Beautiful & Brutal’ was released on January 23 on NOWHERENEAR Records. The track is an ode to “all-consuming and life-altering love” according to an interview with Philip Plested in  Atwood Magazine.

Plested went on to tell Atwood, “‘Beautiful & Brutal’ is a song simply about the good and bad sides of love. It can feel so amazing and then hurt so much in the blink of an eye. I wanted the song to sound as raw as possible yet feel a little upbeat with a sense of excitement and euphoria, just like the ups and downs of love. It’s a three minute thirty second journey through all of the emotions.”

He shared a tweet about the Grey’s placement:

Phil Plested started his music career with rock group Chasing Grace. After the band broke up, he began writing for artists including Zayn, Little Mix, Emeli Sandé, and Lewis Capaldi. Notably, Plested has written the UK Top 5 single ‘Touch’ with Little Mix and ‘Remind Me To Forget’ with Miguel and Kygo.

He released his first solo single ‘I O U’ in 2017, followed by numerous singles before his debut EP First & Foremost in 2018. Plested has released singles throughout 2019 and in his Spotify biography shares, “I write songs for those moments when people are like ‘This is helping me. I really needed this.’ That’s the most important thing for me.”
