A perennial resident on Tunefind’s trending music chart, HBO’s Insecure claimed the top spot last week with a sultry, somber song from indie artist Tanerélle.
‘Nothing Without You’ is heard at the end of the penultimate episode of season 4, underscoring another tense scene between Issa and Molly.
“It was a heavy moment in the show to see Issa and Molly that low in their relationship and the song takes us into the credits beautifully. All credit goes to Issa [Rae] on that one,” Insecure music supervisor Kier Lehman shared with Tunefind. “So cool to hear that Tanerélle connected so strongly with the audience.”
‘Nothing Without You’ was released as a single on January 24, 2020. The 25 year old, shared her gratitude and excitement over the Insecure placement on Instagram:

Nothing Without You was on @insecurehbo last night. I’ve cried so fucking much. After such a heavy couple of weeks, to come home from protesting & see a dream realized. to be placed on a show created by @IssaRae …like when I tell y’all I’m an OG Awkward Black Girl fan…& then for this episode to be directed by freaking @kerrywashington These women are heroes. These women are laying the path for black girls to know that everything and anything is possible. I am so blown away, I am so grateful, I am so full. Thank you for embracing independent artists and for showcasing my art on your platform. To be honest, this quarantine has made me question my future in terms of my career..I’ve secretly battled the fear of losing momentum and not being able to be successful when all of this is said and done…this really lit a fire in my heart & has inspired me all over again. I am forever grateful. Thank you.
Tanerélle Stephens is a singer, instrumentalist, model, and actress from Atlanta, Georgia. An independent artist who moved to L.A. at age 18, Tanerélle graduated with a BFA from a performing arts college.
With a vintage R&B vibe, Tanerélle released her debut single ‘Siren’ in 2015, followed by her EP 11:11 in 2017. She’s been steadily releasing singles, including her latest, ‘Nothing Without You.’
“The human condition is always at the center of my inspiration, the intricate parts of us we most times seem to run from, succumbing to things we shouldn’t, indulging in things we absolutely should but are afraid to, love,’ Tanerélle shared with PAPER Magazine. “I write about love a lot, the good parts, the not so good parts, women empowerment and space. I’m enthralled with space. The fact that there’s so much out there while I’m here gives me this sense of longing, so I put it into my music to kind of etch myself into it as if I’m there.”
Tanerélle also shared a live performance of ‘Nothing Without You’ on her Twitter after the episode aired:
