Nominations for the 72nd Emmy Awards were announced, including the nominees for Outstanding Music Supervision.
Music supervisor Robin Urdang and producers Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino are back again nominated for the music of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, after taking home the award in both 2019 and 2018. But the Outstanding Music Supervision category has expanded to 7 nominees this year, making the competition tougher for the two-time winner.
Thomas Gulobić is nominated for curating the Better Call Saul soundtrack, after being nominated for Emmys in both 2017 and 2019 for the standout AMC series. Golubić has previously won the Guild of Music Supervisors Award twice for Breaking Bad, the series that first introduced fans to Saul Goodman.
Fellow three-time Emmy nominee Nora Felder picks up another nod for her work on the 80s-tastic Stranger Things soundtrack, joining her nominations in 2017 and 2018. Felder previously won the Guild of Music Supervisors Award for season one of Stranger Things.
Jen Malone lands her second Emmy nomination for music supervision, this time for her work on the music of HBO’s Euphoria, along with Adam Leber. The pair won the television drama category at the Guild of Music Supervisors Awards earlier this year. Previously Malone was nominated for the Emmy in 2018 for her work on Donald Glover’s hit Atlanta on FX.
Kier Lehman’s work on the Insecure soundtrack picks up a first Emmy nomination for season four of the HBO hit series. Lehman previously won the Guild of Music Supervisors Award for his work on Insecure season two.
UK music supervisors Catherine Grieves and David Holmes also picked up their first Emmy nomination for their work curating the Killing Eve soundtrack. Holmes pulls double duty on the series, also composing original score and songs along with his bandmate, Keefus Ciancia, of the band Unloved.
Rounding out the Emmy nominees for outstanding music supervision is Liza Richardson, who gets the nod for her work on the Watchmen soundtrack. The critically acclaimed HBO series garnered a whopping 26 Emmy nominations, including nods for series composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who earned nominations both for their score and for Music and Lyrics for their original song, ‘The Way It Used to Be.’

This year marks just the fourth year where Music Supervision is a category at the Emmy Awards, and also an expansion to recognize a total of 7 nominee (versus 5 in previous years). This prominent recognition of the craft of marrying picture with music is important acknowledgement of the role music plays in elevating storytelling in television. The inaugural music supervision Emmy was awarded to Sue Jacobs for her outstanding work on the breakout hit series Big Little Lies. The second year and last year’s music supervision Emmy winner was Robin Urdang for the Amazon Prime hit The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
The Creative Arts Emmy Awards will be presented on September 12th and 13th. The 72nd Emmy Awards show will broadcast live on ABC on September 20th.
