The end montage of the first episode features a cover of ‘Happy Together’. The original is by American rock band, The Turtles. King Princess and Mark Ronson’s version can be heard while the audience sees all the main characters, setting the stage for what’s to come in the next episodes.

Lucifer music supervisor Justin Kamps of Monster Sector Music Supervision shared some background about the song and the show.

Kamps credits Lucifer’s Executive Producer, Jason Ning, who also wrote this episode, with the selection of ‘Happy Together’. “The remake of The Turtles’ classic that King Princess and Mark Ronson released last year was the perfect option for the final moments of 501,” shared Kamps. “Their version further highlights the dual nature of the song. By the time we get to the chorus, everything sounds great, but is it?”

“The rest of the song leans into some borderline obsessive lyrics, which end up fitting perfectly once we see the full extent of one of the main antagonists’ plans later in the season,” Kamps continued. “At the same time, that duality plays out as we check in with all of our characters and see how their actions and emotions when they’re alone, may differ when they’re together. So glad the fans are enjoying this one!”

The original version of ‘Happy Together’ by The Turtles was released in April 1967 on the band’s third album of the same name. King Princess and Mark Ronson released their cover version as a single in October 2019.

King Princess and Mark Ronson previously collaborated on the song ‘Pieces of Us’ from Ronson’s 2019 solo album Late Night Feelings. King Princess is an artist under Mark Ronson’ Zelig Records, a Columbia imprint. Her debut full-length album Cheap Queen was released in February of this year.

Billboard described the sound of ‘Happy Together’ perfectly, “On this brand new cover, King Princess takes lead vocals, delivering the lovey-dovey ode with a sultry tinge over Ronson’s simmering, downtempo beat.”

‘Happy Together’ by King Princess and Mark Ronson is also used in the latest campaign for Tiffany & Co.’s new fragrance line, called Tiffany & Love.

In a video for NME, Mark Ronson and King Princess discuss how they were honoring the original. “The thing about covering a song, it’s like opening up the back of a clock. You learn from it,” Ronson explains. “For the Tiffany & Love campaign, we’re just trying to make a track that felt tough and cool.”

King Princess–born Mikaela Straus–is a Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist. In 2018, she had a breakthrough single ‘1950’ released on Zelig Records, which was featured on hit shows like Legacies and The Bold Type

Mark Ronson started as a DJ and recording artist, but is most recognized as a Grammy Award winning producer. His solo albums have featured well-known artist collaborations and he’s produced songs like ‘Uptown Funk’ sung by Bruno Mars as well as Lady Gaga’s ‘Joanne’ and ‘Shallow’ from A Star Is Born
