Top TV Song Last Week: Dead of Night by Orville Peck

HBOMax’s standout series Euphoria returned for season 2 on January 9th. The season 2 premiere featured over 30 songs and 9 of them made Tunefind’s chart for most popular music last week. The top spot goes to an alternative track by an artist crooning about love and loss.

Nate puts on the radio while driving Cassie to the party. ‘Dead of Night’ begins as Nate rolls down the windows and starts speeding down the road. Orville Peck’s deep voice continues as the car goes faster and faster. Cassie hangs out the window as the song crescendos before ending mid-lyric with a scene change to the party.

‘Dead of Night’ is the first track on the 2019 album Pony. The debut album from Orville Peck hit the Top 5 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart and was nominated for a 2019 Polaris Music Prize and a Juno Award in 2020. On Apple Music, Orville Peck describes each song on the album. “[‘Dead of Night’] is a song about unrequited love,” stated Peck. “It was the first song I wrote for the album, and I wanted it to sound like something familiar, but something completely new as well. I wanted to provoke the kind of sensation of torturous nostalgia.”

Peck elaborates, “I think we all go through somewhere where you remember a moment and you think that thinking about it is going to torture you, but you do it anyway, because we have this weird human nature of putting ourselves through emotional pain. That’s kind of why I wanted the lonely guitar sound, and I wanted to go from very low to very high. I just wanted to give that same feeling sonically that the emotion is about in the song.”

Orville Peck is a pseudonym and the musician has never publicly shown his face, so his backstory is quite a mystery. He wears a cowboy hat and colorful leather masks that are covered in fringe, concealing his identity. Fans have made guesses about who’s behind the masks and sultry, country tone, but no confirmations yet.

Peck released his debut EP Show Pony in 2020, following the album Pony. Show Pony hit no. 20 on Billboard’s Top 200 chart andfeatured a duet with country music royalty Shania Twain called ‘Legends Never Die’. Peck has also released a few singles in 2020 and 2021.

Orville Peck has had placements in a handful of different TV shows including Trinkets, Watchmen, and a couple in Roswell, New Mexico.
