Susan Jacobs Wins First Ever Music Supervision Emmy for Big Little Lies

Susan Jacobs took home the Emmy for Outstanding Music Supervision for her work on HBO limited series Big Little Lies. This marks the historic first Emmy in the new Music Supervision category introduced just this year.

The nominated episode was the season finale, “You Get What You Need,” which featured an exciting mix of Elvis covers (performed at the fundraiser that serves as the pivotal scene for the show), Agnes Obel’s “September Song” – a key song for the series as a whole, and Ituana’s lilting version of “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.”

This diversity reflects the series soundtrack as a whole, which has been lauded for seamlessly using licensed music throughout, rather than employing any score. This approach is a hallmark of director Jean-Marc Vallee, who likes to have the music play a realistic role – what characters are actually listening to in real life. He partners with Susan Jacobs to make this vision a reality.

Pint-sized music savant Chloe (played by Darby Camp) served as a sonic muse for the show, with her ever-present iPod and her exceptional taste in music. It’s no surprise that she plans to run a massive record label when she grows up.

Jacobs is the mastermind behind the music of some major hits recognized for their soundtracks: Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, Little Miss Sunshine, Joy, and many more.

Insanely popular on Tunefind, we track all of the songs featured in Big Little Lies. Below are the fan favorites from the show:
